x and y intercepts

Good wishes to all....Friends today i am with an essential topic in mathematics x and y intercepts. We will first learn what is xy intercept and then solve an example below.

Intercept is a point at which a line, curve, or surface intersects an axis.

Two types of intercepts are:-

a) x intercept
b) y intercept

X intercept: The x intercept of a line is a point at which the line cuts the X-axis. The x-intercept of a line is denoted as (x, 0)

Y intercept: The y intercept of a line is a point at which the line cuts the Y-axis. The y-intercept of a line is denoted as (0, y)

Example

Find the form of x-intercept of the line y = x - 2

Solution:

Given, the line y =x -2

To find the form of x intercept we need to substitute y = 0 in the equation of line.

y = x -2

Substitute y = 0 in the above line equation,

y =x -2

0 = x -2

Add 2 on both sides,

2 = x -2 + 2

2 = x

x = 2

The x intercept of the line is ( 2 , 0)
