Discount

In our daily lives we come across banners which mentions 50% discount sale, 20% discount sale and so on. Have you come across this? Do you know what discount mean? Do you know how it is calculated? Lets learn that in detail. I have an introduction to discount and a few solved problem on discount in percentage.

Introduction of discount:-

When the sale price is subtracted with the actual price we get the amount of the particular commodity or the product after discount. Discount means 'for less' or 'at a reduced price'. Usually discount or rebate is expressed in terms of percentage. Eg:- A 15% discount means for every purchase of $100 a discount or a reduction of $15 is given.

The formula to find the sale price is sale price= actual price- discount.

The formula to find the discount price of a commodity is
Discount price= actual price-sale price.

Discount in percentage can be calculated as discount/actual price*100.

With the help of these equations lets solve a few problems which will help us understand the concept better.

Problem No. 1:-
A quality pencil that normally costs 23 is being sold for only 15.Calculate the discount price in dollars, and also find the percentage of the actual price.

Solving steps:

Actual cost of the pencil = $23

Selling price of the pencil = $15

Therefore find the discount price

Discount = actual price – selling price

Discount = 23 - 15

Discount = $8

Then we have to find the percentage of the actual price

Discount percentage = discount/actual price*100

= (8/23)*100

=34.78 %

Therefore the final answer is 34.78 %

By looking at the definition above and the problem which is solved you will be able to judge the discount given and its calculation. From now when you accompany your mom for any purchase and you see a banner with discount percentage given, help your mom calculating the discount price. This will help you work on it and help your mom also. Let me know your comment on this.
