Addition and subtraction of Algebrical Fractions

I am sure you have learnt addition and subtraction of two or more numbers in your lower classes right, now i am here to help you add and subtract the algebraic fractions.

Addition of Algebraic Fractions:

To solve algebraic fractions you need to follow three basic steps.

First step: Check if the denominators are the same or not. If it is not the same you will have to take the LCD by cross multiplication.

Second step: Add the numerators and put the same denominator.

Third step: Lastly reduce the fraction.

This can be explained with the help of an simple example. The below example is with different denominator therefore you will have to take the LCD.

Following are the solved examples on addition of algebraic functions

Example:- 2 /(x+1) + 1 /x

2 /(x+1) + 1 /x
(2x + (x+1)) /(x+1) x
(2x + (x+1)) /(x+1) x = (3x +1) /(x+1) x
(3x +1) /(x+1) x (Answer)

These steps mentioned above is a very simple way to add algebrical fractions.

Now, lets work on subtraction of fractions

Subtraction of Algebraic function:-

Subtraction of Algebraic function has the same three basic step to be followed as Addition of Fractions. This can be explained with the help of an example

Following are the solved examples on subtraction of algebraic functions

Example:- 5x / 2y – x / 2y (Here we find the denominator are the same therefore LCD is not required)

(5x / 2y) - (x / 2y) = (5x - x) /2y

=4x /2y ( you will have to reduce the fraction)

= 2x /y
